RHIANNE HILL

PROPOSED BY: VICTORIA VAUGHAN / SECONDED BY: DANN PARRY

My name is Rhianne Hill, I’m an Interior Architecture and Design student from Year Two, and I am running for two positions this election, LGBT Officer and Student Governor.

I am currently LGBT Officer for Farnham campus, the first at UCA Farnham for a while, and I am genuinely concerned this role will not be filled for the next academic year. There is nothing more important than having a strong voice for equality (especially sexual equality) in our student council, and I am more than happy to fill this role again. Having no representation at all in this area is absolute crazy talk – I won’t let it happen!

The biggest change I’ve tried to implement this year is to rename the very title of this position across all campuses (because if you want to make a difference, why not question and shake up the very definition of your officer role?). I want something less full of labels and more representative of the full spectrum of sexuality. I am hoping that if you’re still a student next year, rather than electing an LGBT Officer, you will be electing something along the lines of a Sexual and Gender Fluidity Officer. This person will embrace the ideals of equality, and will stand up for anyone and everyone regardless of their orientation or preferred gender, just as I have and will.

Whilst I can admit I have not been a proactive officer in terms of leading events or creating a network, I have definitely been a proactive council member in terms of contributing to meetings and coming up with new ideas. I fear time has run away from me this year (it’s funny how time manages to do that), and if elected next year I will still stick to my original promises. These include:

  • forming the foundations of a strong support network for anyone who identifies with sexual equality (which I hope will be in place for years to come)
  • organising regular meet ups for people to share their views, and more importantly for meeting people who share the same views as you
  • continuing to offer support to you all, and doing all in my power to help make things change to reflect your views

I stand for sexual and gender fluidity, and a strong network in support of this. If you identify with anything I’ve talked about here, please vote for me! 🙂

EIRA CANNON

PROPOSED BY: REBECCA CASSIDY / SECONDED BY: HANNAH OAKES

I am a second year photography student who has dyslexia and who has worked first hand with children and adults who have disabilities, i want to try and make the university experience for people of all abilities equal.

I am currently the Student with Disabilities Officer at the moment, this year i have really enjoyed the position and i have already had one motion that has made a visible change to the university. This was the chaniging of the signs in the spinal corridor so that it was more legible for students to read compared to signes before hand which was light grey with white text.

I am a vocal person so I try and get points across that i believe to be important.

The main things that i would like to do if i was to get the position again is to, publicise the position more as I feel that people dont really understand the role and the fact that if someone has an idea we ( the student council) can help to make a difference and get changes whoch students believe to be necessary heard by the univeristy and possibly make a change.

I would also like to try and get more students aware of other stuents who may needhelp and support, as i feel that we should all help one another at univeristy even if it means opening doors.

I would aslo like to make it possible for students who are chair bound to be able to come on trips and excusions whether it is in london or abroad as we should all have equal opportunities to experiecne what everyone else does.

Making the online dyslexia test a cumpolsury thing to do when enroling so that studenst are aware that if they are they can get help and that students who may have it but dont know can go to the right people as soon as possible so that it is not left to the last year.

I will work really hard to try and get these motions into action.

RACHAEL FLETCHER

PROPOSED BY: CONOR O’REILLY / SECONDED BY: CHARLOTTE LAWRENCE

Hi! My name is Rachael and I’m a second year Journalism student at Farnham. As the current Netball Captain, I have first hand experience with running a club at UCA. Before attending UCA I spent a year at a University of London and played for both their Netball and Lacrosse teams so I also have an insight into how clubs are ran at larger universities. As a result of this I have many ideas which I believe can improve Clubs & Socs across the board. For example:

Social nights. I believe there should be more encouragement for the teams to socialise together and if I was elected I would work closely with the Student Union to organise SU nights with themes and drinks deals especially for the sports teams.

Inter-sport Friendlies. Another way for the sports teams to work together is through mixed inter-sport friendlies. This could also be turned into a fundraising activity with any money raised going back into the teams’ budgets.

Promotion of Societies. Are you a keen gamer? Thai Boxer? Table Tennis extraordinaire? All of these societies, plus many more are available to join at UCA however they aren’t promoted or advertised so very few people are aware of them. As Clubs & Socs Officer, I would aim to have all Societies heavily promoted, not just sports teams.

Fundraising. As we are a small university the budgets for our Clubs & Socs are also small which therefore emphasises our need to fundraise. With a bigger budget, teams can afford extra training sessions, more kit and professional coaches which in turn means a more successful reputation for UCA among other teams in the league. As Clubs & Socs Officer, I would encourage and organise fundraising events for clubs to participate in to see that the money is available for them to achieve their true potential.

Clubs & Socs Dinner. At the end of the year a formal event should be held to acknowledge the success of our Clubs & Societies together, this could also act as an awards ceremony for sports teams to congratulate each other on their season’s successes.

Sports for Ladies. Currently there are only two sports available to ladies at UCA: Netball and Mixed Dodgeball. At the moment I am in talks with a member of the RFU about starting a Ladies Rugby team at Uni and as Clubs & Socs Officer, I will endeavour to assist anyone that wishes to start up a Club or Society of their own.

I AM SPORTACUS, LET ME ROCK YOUR SOCS!

CHARLOTTE LAWRENCE

PROPOSED BY: JENNA BROWN / SECONDED BY: RACHAEL FLETCHER

I am nominating myself as a Student Experience Officer because I love my Student Union and want to get others as passionate about it as I am. I am already quite involved with the Student Union as I am a Course Rep and a member of Bar Staff, but I feel like I want to do more and leave a more impressionable mark when I leave, I feel the only way to do this is by becoming a Student Experience Officer.

As a member of the bar staff at the Student Union, I feel applying for the role of Student Experience Officer would be the best way to gain information from students, as they will see me as a familiar face and feel comfortable talking to me about improvements they wish to see. Using my skills as a Course Rep, I will be able to deal with the information and relay it back to whom it concerns in a strong and professional manner.

If elected, I would start with making the Students Union a well know hub with all the years, with promotion of its facilities, as I feel many first years aren’t aware of its capabilities, and the strong workforce behind it. I would try and regularly talk to the students, to see what they want from the Union, show them how they can get involved and make a change they want to see.

I love the Student Union and I want to make it a strong and reliable place in the University, that people feel comfortable to come to, and feel free to speak about any concerns they may have, what they feel they can do better for the Student body, without feeling like their voice will be lost in a sea of others.

JESSICA PASTOR

PROPOSED BY: CRISTINA PASTOR / SECONDED BY: FRANK NEWMAN

My name is Jess and I am a second year Graphic Communication student.

I am running for Student Experience Officer because I have two years of knowledge on how the Student Union works, what can be done and how. I have also worked for Glasshouse for the past two years which gives me a great insight on the night-life at UCA and am eager to hear suggestions students may have for the nights.

I would love this position because I want to help students get the most out of their time at UCA, I am easy to talk to and will work hard to get your message across.
