Dear Students,

UCA Students’ Union Council would like to share this statement with you, after recent events surrounding the death of Sarah Everard and police violence at peaceful protests.

We strongly believe that no voice should go unheard and would like to remind you that while the police and government may try to silence our voices - the Union Council is here to listen to and amplify the voices of UCA students.

In regards to your safety at UCA and in general, we are currently in discussions with leadership staff about what can be done to help create a stronger feeling of safety for students on and off campus. The things we are requesting from leadership include:

  • Clearer guidance on how to report sexual assault to UCA
  • Specific support teams to help victims of sexual harassment or assault, in addition to the Gateway service
  • Free self defence classes
  • Safety equipment such as panic alarms to be distributed

We will update students on these discussions as and when we have more concrete answers and solutions.

Most importantly, we would like to remind you all that no student at UCA needs to suffer alone, the Union Council, Students Union and other support systems at UCA will always be there to listen and guide you as students - please reach out if you are in need of help.

UCASU offers free and independent support, which can be accessed by emailing advice.su@uca.ac.uk or texting 07827 316142.

We will not be silenced and we will work together to create a stronger, safer University environment.

Many thanks,

The Union Council
