UCASU stands in firm opposition to the recent ruling by the UK Supreme Court that defines 'woman' solely by biological sex under the 2010 Equality Act.
While the ruling states that the terms 'woman' and 'sex' refer to biological definitions — and asserts that this is necessary for the coherence of single-sex spaces — we believe this interpretation is regressive and harmful. The protected characteristic of gender reassignment remains unaffected by this decision; however, we recognise that an attack on trans rights is an attack on all rights.
Everyone has the right to define themselves, and UCASU remains unwavering in our commitment to supporting trans rights and autonomy. Our union is proud to reaffirm that clubs and societies at UCASU have always been, and shall continue to be, ‘self-defining’.
We stand with our trans members, and with all those affected by this ruling. Our community is strongest when it is inclusive, respectful, and supportive of every individual’s right to self-identify.
Trans rights are human rights — now and always.
