"I’m Rajon Voumick, one of your UCASU Presidents for the 2024/25 academic year. It’s an honour to serve you again, having been re-elected by the student body."
Meet Rajon Voumick, your elected Students' Union President, representing you at University for the Creative Arts Epsom! Whilst running for his first term as President, Rajon was finishing up a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in our Epsom Business School!
We asked Rajon a few questions about being re-elected as Students' Union President, his journey to becoming president, his vision for the future, and even a few fun facts you probably didn’t know. So, grab your coffee, settle in, and get ready to get to know the person who’s working hard to make our university experience unforgettable.
What made you want to run for re-election as a President at UCA Students’ Union?
"Running for re-election as President of the UCA Students' Union was a decision driven by my passion for continuing the progress we've made together and my commitment to addressing the evolving needs of our student body. Last year, we laid a solid foundation by improving communication, fostering community engagement, and supporting career development. However, there's still much more to be done.
I believe in continuity and building upon the initiatives we've started. By re-running, I aim to ensure that ongoing projects such as creating social spaces for mental well-being, celebrating our diverse cultures, and empowering international students continue to flourish. My goal is to maintain open communication with students, listen to their concerns, and work collaboratively to implement positive changes that benefit everyone.
Ultimately, I want to keep making a difference in the lives of our students, ensuring that their voices are heard and their university experience is enriching and supportive. Re-election allows me to stay dedicated to these objectives and continue serving the UCA community with the same enthusiasm and commitment."
As you’ve been voted in based on your manifesto – what campaigns will you have this year, and what will you be aiming to achieve during your time as President?
"This year, I have outlined several key campaigns based on my manifesto that focus on enhancing the overall student experience and addressing the specific needs of our diverse student body. These campaigns include:
- Fostering open communication between students and the Students' Union, and ensuring that students feel heard and valued by maintaining regular dialogues, gathering feedback, and acting on their concerns and ideas.
- Strengthening the sense of community on campus, and encouraging more students to join clubs and societies, and actively participate in campus activities. This will help create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
- Supporting career development by providing robust support for students' career planning and development, expanding resources for part-time employment, internships, and job opportunities. I will work to enhance our career services to ensure students are well-prepared for their professional journeys.
- Promoting mental well-being on campus, and establish dedicated social spaces where students can relax, unwind, and connect with peers, which will foster a healthier campus environment.
- Highlighting and celebrating the rich cultural diversity of our student body through the organisation of events and activities that showcase different cultures and traditions. This will help build understanding, appreciation, and unity among students from various backgrounds.
- Empowering international students by providing comprehensive support, develop a support center tailored to the unique needs of international students, offering assistance with academic, social, and cultural integration."
How can UCA students get involved witn your campaigns?
"To ensure student participation, I will actively communicate through our social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and our community groups. I’ll also be available on campus for direct interactions, listening to concerns, and gathering feedback. Students can get involved by attending events, joining discussions, and contributing their ideas and perspectives. Together, we can make our campaigns successful and impactful."
What advice would you give to our new intake of students to ensure they get the best from their university experience?
"To make the most of your university experience, focus on knowing yourself, boosting your self-confidence, and turning weaknesses into strengths. Engage with others to improve your communication skills and remember that you are not alone. We are here to support you through your journey. Participate in campus activities, join clubs and societies, and take advantage of the resources available to you."
Finally, what are you looking forward to most about the coming academic year?
"I am looking forward to creating a happier, more supportive campus environment where students feel comfortable addressing their problems and overcoming challenges with enthusiasm. By fostering a sense of community and inclusivity, I aim to ensure that every student has a positive and enriching experience at UCA."
