ABOUT ME:

I’m Tasmin, Tazz for short. I am 20 and in my second year of creative arts for theatre and film.

I love creating theatrical props and sets as these can be really exaggerated and over the top.

Enough about my work, you’re here to know about me!

I am the leader of the Pole Fitness Club at Rochester, which I set up at the beginning of the year.

I’m told I can be really LOUD! – Especially when I’m excited. I love to chat and could talk all day given half the chance. I’d like to think that I am open minded and approachable about any subject.

I feel that because I am sociable and chatty that I would make a great Student Experience Officer. I’m willing to go out of my way to speak to people from all different backgrounds and cultures. There are no barriers between myself and any student here at UCA.

I want to get to know students on a personal and friendly basis – not a formal one! So, if I am sitting in the canteen, I’d like to think that students can approach me about their student experience!

While I want to hear your ideas, I feel that I have lots of my own ideas and I’d love to hear how we can all work together to make them effective.

IF ELECTED, HOW WOULD YOU CREATE MORE OF A COMMUNITY?

I have heard that an online forum is going to be created for the students to be able to propose things that they feel need to be changed. This will be fed into the Students’ Union and the University giving the students an opportunity to share their ideas with the decision makers. I think this is a brilliant idea and would love to work on this with as many students as possible because YOUR VIEWS MATTER! I also think that it is important to build a good relationship between the students and the Students’ Union. In order to make a strong connection between all four UCA campuses I feel we really need to have regular meetings between the Student Councils on each Campus. Therefore I propose that Rochester and Canterbury meet on each Campus, and Epsom and Farnham meet on their campuses. I also think that we could use the Students’ Union skype accounts more to discuss issues that affect students across all four campuses of the University. I think these meetings should occur 5 times a year and should aim to create unity amongst our students rather than individual campuses.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS?

At present I don’t feel like the students are as involved in meetings with the Students’ Union as they could be. I think that the main reason for this is because students don’t have the time to sit through an entire meeting just to make a point, and, let’s face it, meetings are boring and uninteresting. I think we need to change the way we interact with students. Let’s start thinking about online forums and course rep feedback sessions. Course reps have a great relationship with their peers and will be aware of the changes that need to be made to help improve the student experience. Let’s start using them more in the activity we do! Not every demand will be able to met, but we could start on the right foot by knowing that these problems exist. I think that this will get more students involved with the Union as they will know about who they are and what they do.

HOW WOULD YOU INSPIRE STUDENTS TO HAVE A VOICE?

We can’t have a strong student voice if the students don’t know that the Union exists. The Union is invisible at the moment and we need to change that! Communication is a key area that I would like to improve to help inspire student voice. One of the ways I intend to do this is to encourage all council members to meet all clubs, Societies, Reps and other groups of students to hear their ideas – especially around the social aspect of University life. While everyone wants their voice heard, not everybody wants to be known – particularly around difficult subjects. The Student’s Union needs to have things available where students are anonymously able to post feedback and ideas to the Union. We could use the online forum or alternatively look into interactive noticeboards. I also think the Union could be more savvy on social media and interact with us on our terms.

ABOUT ME:

As a child I have always dreamed that I could be a animator or at least a better artist. So I decided to join the art industry. I enjoy my course very much and I want to help in anyway I can to help spread the joy and amazement that it is to be a student. I am already a member of the Student Ambassador team as well as a representative for my course. So the more I can do to help the better really. In terms of everything else about me, I enjoy listening to music, spending time with my friends, playing computer/video games, writing stories and reading.

IF ELECTED, HOW WOULD YOU CREATE MORE OF A COMMUNITY?

If I was elected I would be very enthusiastic about spreading the message and helping students in my campus and across other campus’s in relation to my duties. I would be a listener and listen to students and do what ever I can do help them fulfill their wishes within the community. In terms of online, I have a skill set of social media relations which I can use to help collaborate with other students on the 3 other campus’s and ensure that everyone has their say. As my course invites our students to have a creative blog to display all our work, I think it would be a good idea to have a blog where students can go to share their experiences. Not like Facebook, but a similar scenario. This would hopefully then encourage students to share their experiences in a positive way or even a negative way, so that other students can respond and invite that student to advice and help that they may be looking for.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS?

I would help promote the current opportunities as much as I can, as well as help make it easier for students communicate across campus, and within, in order to help them in anyway they need. I would like to also promote a social interaction forum online, rather like how I operate on my course with out blogs and the course blog. So that it becomes easier and clearer for students to talk to each other as well as present opportunities on wider scale.

HOW WOULD YOU INSPIRE STUDENTS TO HAVE A VOICE?

Every student has a voice, but not everyone can be heard. I want all students to be able to have that equal opportunity to have their say, and for the Union to be able to return that voice with more positive, inspirational results. Therefore, perhaps help the union be aware that more communication is needed between them and the students and most of the students probably do not know what the Union does and how they go about their mission to make the student experience better – in all honesty I knew there was a Union, but I didn’t think they were doing much to help as they actually are. I would want to possible help the Union, through social media and inner community to make sure that students know who the Union are, help them understand the Union’s intentions and just generally make students aware that the Union exists.
