KAILEIGH BORDEN – SURREY STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES OFFICER CANDIDATE
My name is Kaileigh Borden-Nolan,and I am running to be your next Student with Disabilities Officer. I am a Dyspraxic and Dyslexic student with a Congenital hip condition. As a student with various difficulties I want to help improve our UCA environment to make it more accessible and approachable.
I will aim to rid of the stigma associated with learning difficulties–
Even though our university consists of a large majority of people with learning difficulties, I find that people are still shy of what their differences are that set them apart. I also find that the lack of awareness amongst students of various difficulties enables judgement and seclusion. I want to help so that we all feel included, and feel we can share our differences without judgement.
Also, I don’t want to just rid of the social stigma around the university, I would like to communicate a larger message to the outside community and work towards acceptance of all disability differences. I feel a university student could influence society of today, and this could be my opportunity,as well as yours.
I will aim to consistently push for compromises to be made by the University for people with specific needs–
I motivated the university to make digital textbooks acceptable for projects as I personally struggled to do physical sketchbooks in year one. Since it was accepted as an option for people a like, it has now been made an option for my course. Quick, easy, simple. I can be the person to work towards making these kind of changes for you.
I also believe lockers should be available for students with physical disabilities while on campus. I find it a physical struggle to carry books as well as my laptop around the University if I have a whole day. I know that I wouldn’t be the only student who would benefit from this.
