KANNDISS RILEY – FARNHAM INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS OFFICER CANDIDATE[OTHER FARNHAM INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS OFFICER CANDIDATES: NONE]
I am currently a second year student at University for the Creative Arts in Farnham studying journalism. I have created a website and magazine called Riley’s Cuisine for my mid term project which required me to produce a website with variety of media content on a particular speciality; my chosen speciality is Food. Since the launch of Riley’s Cuisine I have had a great deal of success and y project has blossomed into a flourishing company with a wide social community and fan base.
IF ELECTED, HOW WOULD YOU CREATE MORE OF A COMMUNITY?
I feel at the moment the only strong communication for the university is the UCA fresher’s page there needs to be a means to help each year group communicate through MYUCA chat room for year group, course and society group. More day time event where by the students come together to do things in social environment such as breakfast club where the librarians are on offer to aid students with any difficulties in their work (go into the canteen and have one to one sessions available). Once a month event where the quad/canteen becomes a music focal point where students can enjoy music and food, because of students lack of attendance to SU nights this could help gain larger turn outs to events at the Glass House as Student DJ’s can show case their skills.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS?
I would like there to be opportunity for students to have the right to discuss before the term starts what expectations they have for their course next year, to solve the issue with 1st years this advice will be taken from feed back from the first years that are going to become second year and the third years whom are leaving education at the university. I want to help bring forward better opportunities for student societies by assuring facilities at all times. Lobby 24 hr learning and resource facility.
HOW WOULD YOU INSPIRE STUDENTS TO HAVE A VOICE?
By showing them how impactful their voice can be, no matter what course the person is on as an individual from the journalism department I can say I have communicated with many student from a broad selection of course i.e. animation, jewellery and films studies to appreciate that we all voice the same grievances and working to similar goals. That when it comes to speaking up about subjects we all hold the same voice and this will only grow as the university expands in number and creative course type.
