WHAT ARE IDENTITY COMMUNITIES?

Under the umbrella of Communities, we have four ‘Identity Communities’. These are based on the National Union of Students’ four main liberation campaigns:

  • Women Students
  • Disabled Students
  • BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicities) Students, and
  • LGBTQ+ Students

You can take part in any Identity Community you identify into – the BAME Students Community is for black or minority ethnicity students only, LGBTQ+ Students Community is for students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+ only, and so on. Our Women Students Community is trans-inclusive.
These Communities will run events and campaigns throughout the year, with the support of the Union. You can join an Identity Community by clicking the link at the bottom of that Community’s page, or you can volunteer to be a leader for an Identity Community and help to make it a fun and supportive space for students.

WHAT YOU’VE DONE

Every year our BAME Students Communities celebrate Black History Month, setting up film screenings, debates, socials, mini-fairs and more. The LGBTQ+ Students Communities come together yearly to fundraise for our spot in the Pride in London parade, which we have proudly taken part in since 2017. The Disabled Students Communities ran an invisible disability awareness campaign, with the campaign badges running out on all four campuses within weeks! The Women Students Communities set up a campus support group, and used their time together for discussion and socialising.
The possibilities are almost endless, and each year will look different depending on the Community leaders and what you want from your Community.

JOIN IN

If you’d like to take part in any Communities you can go along to any activities with no commitment. You can also sign up for updates on each Community’s page, or sign up to become a Community leader.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2020

Every October, UCASU celebrates Black History Month. BAME Students Community (with the support of UCA officers and staff) create events, activities and social media content that honours Black History and highlights the achievements of Black people and communities in recent years. Our BAME Students Community are protected spaces for students who are BAME (Black and Minority Ethnicities) – any BAME student can attend Community activities for free.
If you are a Black student who is interested in helping to organise Black History Month or just want to come along, check out the BHM page.
