STARTING AT UCA

A message from UCA:

Joining the UCA community this autumn

We’re excited to welcome you onto our campuses this autumn. Because we know how important in-person teaching is when you’re studying a creative subject, we’re planning to open all our sites so that you can learn face-to-face with your tutors and fellow students as much as possible and in line with public health advice.

In order to prepare for this, we have amended our term dates to allow time for us to make some adjustments to our campus environments.

New term start dates for 2020

Further education - enrolment w/c 14 September

Undergraduate and postgraduate - enrolment w/c 12 October

October International Pathway courses - enrolment w/c 26 October

We want to make sure that we keep you safe throughout your time at UCA, so here’s a guide to how we’re planning to operate when you join us:

Changes to learning spaces

  • Our priority as a university is to deliver as much teaching as possible on campus in line with public health advice
  • We plan to update the layouts of our classrooms, workshops and studios so you can have safe access to these and other specialist facilities, taking social distancing measures into account.

Timetabling

  • We’re planning our scheduling of classes to limit the number of students on campus at any one time
  • We’ll be trialling the ‘bubble’ principle: meaning you will be taught in a group, and have as little physical contact with other groups as possible
  • We’re planning the scheduling of your classes so you can move between them safely and minimise the number of journeys to and from campus each week.

Online learning

  • Where practical, we’ll put our lectures, classes and seminars online so that you can still access them if you are self-isolating, shielding, or unable to come to the UK.

Wellbeing & support

  • You’ll have one-to-one Personal Development Tutorials with an academic tutor, where they’ll talk through your progress and check on your wellbeing. They will also offer online sessions when face-to-face meetings aren’t possible.
  • You’ll have access to a full range of specialist advisors who will offer online sessions when face-to-face meetings aren’t possible.
  • All our plans take students who might be most vulnerable to disruption into account – we’re making sure we can deliver learning safely to all our students, whether that means accessing teaching on campus, or online.

Industry links

  • We’ll continue to host visiting lectures, industry projects, and networking events either face-to-face or through online learning.
  • We will engage with work placement providers to ensure that your placements follow public health advice – even if that means you working for your placement organisation remotely. Where that’s not possible, we’ll offer alternatives to make sure you still get plenty of industry interaction.

Assessments

  • If you’ve been personally affected by Coronavirus, your assessments will take that into account and make sure you aren’t disadvantaged by it.

Libraries & resources

  • We are developing new arrangements for library services and equipment hire to make sure you can borrow what you need safely.
  • As soon as Government advice permits, we will provide as much physical access to our libraries as we can to ensure that you have access to our physical and digital collections, but are able to observe social distancing for you own safety and that of others.

Adapting to your feedback and keeping you informed

  • We’ll continue to work with you to find out how you’re feeling about the new measures.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to work with teaching staff to adapt and improve the way we deliver your course in line with public health guidelines.
  • In such a changing environment, we will write to you if we need to make more changes to the way we deliver your course.
  • You will have the right to complain if you are not satisfied with our attempts to address any concerns you may have.
