Union Update Dec 2018 – Jan 2019

We’re back! December was a quiet month, quickly followed by a full-on January packed with ReFreshers fairs, taster sessions and planning for some big upcoming events.

As we were winding down for the holidays, our cheerleading team Hellcats won first place in the Winter Wonderland competition, making them national champions for the second year running. One of our Farnham students also won a silver medal in a national Judo competition for UCA.

We ran ReFreshers fairs on each campus at the beginning of January, inviting local organisations such as Porchlight, Challengers, and local churches and mosques, to meet with students and encourage community participation. We had over 50 stalls across the fairs and many students sign up to take part in new activities and volunteering.

Last week it was confirmed to us by Medway Council that, as a result of our lobbying for safer commutes for students, a new path will be constructed across Jacksons Field. More details of this will be announced after an upcoming meeting we have with council staff members. This is an exciting win for our Rochester safety campaign, and for all Rochester students.

We have also been meeting with the Quality department, working on new strategies for increasing and improving student engagement. We look forward to seeing where this collaboration can take us in the coming months. This week, we also have another round of Student Forums, where our sabbatical officers will be discussing student experience directly with students, and working together to come up with shared solutions for their concerns.

Now entering February, we have a full calendar of events celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month, organised by our VP Kent Riley Clowes, as well as our LGBTQ+ student groups and Trans & Trans Ally Society. This includes pronoun badge making sessions, film screenings, drag makeup lessons, regular educational posts on our blog, and more. Keep an eye out for these on our Facebook page, and happening on your campus.

In December 2018 and January 2019, we have:

Run four ReFreshers fairs with over 50 stalls

Supported 44 students through our advice service (bringing our total up to 90 since September)

Put on 151 OPEN activities (29 in Canterbury, 19 in Epsom, 71 in Farnham, 21 in Rochester)

Held 20 late night events

Affiliated two new societies

Got 45 more students signed up to our clubs and societies

Engaged with prospective students at eight Open Days and Applicant Days

Helped students to run two liberation meetings across our campuses

Utilised 551 hours of student staff time

In February 2019, we will:

Run 34 events for LGBTQ+ History Month, raising money for our LGBTQ+ students and to combat period poverty

Facilitate another round of student forums

Finalise planning for our elections in March (!)

Begin organising our end-of-year Awards ceremony

Attend follow up meetings on major projects, including the Jacksons Field footpath

Say farewell to our longest-serving staff member, Myra Falkner, who is retiring after 13 years working for UCA Students’ Union.

Keep an eye out for more over this month, and our next update in March!
