A message From Simone Ziel, Your Vice-President (Surrey) Elect on International Women’s Day!

Today is March 8th. Today is a bittersweet day. As everyone will be celebrating women around the world, their accomplishments and changes they have brought forth to the world, many will also be remembering those who have had to endure the consequences of this. Those who were persecuted for not abiding to the laws set in place to restrict them; those who are still subject to discrimination like trans women in politics; those who are still deprived of basic human rights that some countries and communities see as a privilege like free education; those who have their freedom stripped away from them like the women held in Yarls Wood detention centre.

We have progressed over the years. Walls have started to break down, but with every wall in the process of knocked down, there are other walls that are still being built up, or even worse, ignored.

On this day, as we celebrate the phenomenal achievements of women, may we pay solidarity to those who are currently in the process of their breakthrough.

We are amazing, strong, and capable of so much.

Happy International Women’s Day!
