CampaignsResponse to UCA fees increase

Fees rise to £8,500

As a result of the severe funding cuts imposed of 80% by the Government on University for the Creative Arts (UCA), the university will charge £8,500 per year for its undergraduate courses from 2012.

In reaction to the announcement UCA Students’ Union Chair of Trustees Benjo Taylor said:

“This figure was not unexpected considering the reckless manner in which the coalition Government has decided to attack funding on Higher Education institutions, particularly those specialising in the creative arts.”

“Nevertheless, UCA Students’ Union is disappointed that the fees have had to be set at such a high level to maintain the existing quality of education. The coalition Government are attacking education and it is unacceptable to risk the fate of both an incredibly lucrative UK industry and the future of thousands of young people.”

In November 2010, UCA Students’ Union took over 450 students to peacefully protest in London against the proposed rise in fees.

Across the five UCA campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester, elected officers met with their MPs, lobbying them to vote against increasing the maximum charge to £9,000.

UCA Students’ Union is working with the university to ensure the student experience is improved and will lobby the Government to commit to Widening Participation.
