Response to course changes at UCA Maidstone

On behalf of the Executive Committee 2011/12:

University for the Creative Arts announced changes to the ‘Course Portfolio’ for the 2012-13 academic year on 10 November.

The ‘course portfolio’ is the range of courses UCA offers. The changes announced were to two courses at the Maidstone campus.

It was decided the BA (Hons) Illustration course will move to Farnham with first years starting there in September 2012, and BA (Hons) Graphic Design: Visual Communication will have its recruitment suspended pending a review of all Graphic Design courses.

This is linked to the decision for Midkent College to purchase the Maidstone campus and the phase out of UCA’s presence by July 2014.

UCA Students’ Union is working to ensure the voice of UCA students is heard and we have invited Vice Chancellor Simon Ofield-Kerr to hold an all-student meeting on Friday 25th November 2011.

All five Campus Officers will be meeting with Mark Hunt, Deputy Vice Chancellor, on 6 December 2011 to discuss the decision and implications for students in the coming years.

We re-iterate the cast-iron guarantee that UCA has publicised to all students; that students who study at Maidstone will see out their degree ‘in good standing’ at the Maidstone campus.

However, the Union is aware of concern from students over course provision, staff, resources and space in the coming academic years. We believe a meeting between students and the Vice Chancellor and members of University Executive will allow you to have these concerns addressed.

Luke Frost, Maidstone Campus Officer, is continuing to work with UCA in a number of areas to ensure that quality is upheld for students at Maidstone.

As always, UCA Students’ Union invites all Maidstone students to consult with your Campus Officer, Luke Frost, either by visiting him in his office by the refectory, emailing lfrost.su@ucreative.ac.uk or calling 01622 620013.
