All Farnham Students - Freshers 2010 – Official Announcement

Amongst all the rebranding, refurbing and recruiting, I’m now able to break the silence, update you all and confirm/squash the rumours regarding all things Farnham Freshers 2010. Bear with me, there’s a lot to discuss…

SU Entertainments:
I can confirm that we are in the process of recruiting a new entertainments and venue manager and full-time bar supervisor in time for September… in the meantime, ents has fallen to me… don’t panic though – I’m good at delegation and will be handing the power straight to those who run the SU – you lot! This means that finally together, we have the opportunity to come up with something special for Freshers’ 2010 and further. There should always be real student led SU entertainments and a healthy bank of student DJ’s and student run nights. For reasons now irrelevant, this has pretty much disappeared. So now, this is a call to arms so to speak for you to join the team to finally make freshers one for us all to be proud of.

If you are a DJ/VJ and want to be regularly involved or you have an idea for a day/night you’d like to put on– contact me. This could be a one-off event, a monthly night, specific for the late licence nights (Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday), for the free 11pm nights (Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday) or for daytime/early-evening. The successful student instigated nights from last year will continue (Farnham Underground, LGBT night, Shut-up and dance: Live bands) plus there will be a commitment to more live music, comedy nights, film screenings, regular student DJ’s and probably less Tim Westwood.

Also, as part of the refurb we have now installed VJing and multiple screening facilities throughout the venue so any VJ’s, animators, filmmakers, digital artist etc – come forward!

Clubs and Societies:
Released from my ‘Education & Welfare’ restraints – I also now have responsibility for activities. This isn’t widely known but listen up – each year there is a large amount of money to fund student clubs, societies and activities. I’m determined that you all get access to this and expand on what we already have on offer (Visit our clubs page for a look). We’re in the process of setting up an air-soft society, entering teams in table-tennis and pool leagues, organising foreign language classes, starting a debate society, indoor 5-a-side football etc.  I want us to be a lot more ambitious this year – do you have an idea for an activity or society you’d like to see? Do you have a specialist skill or hobby that you’d like to share with other students or be funded to pursue this further? It could be a weekly thing or a one off trip, event or individual sponsorship. Forget about all the forms and risk assessments – simply contact me and I’ll help make it happen and get the funding sorted for September.

Freshers Helpers
Lastly, I’m recruiting a team of freshers helpers. There are several different events that you can be involved in: Halls move-in day, international students’ welcome days, freshers’ fayre, daytime activities throughout freshers, town tours etc. Contact me if you would like to be on the team and mention if there are specific events you want to be involved with. We are also looking for ideas for daytime things during freshers in addition to the welcome BBQ’s we have planned in the first week. You will all of course get a t-shirt with the new SU branding (more on this another day).

OK? Hope all is well with everyone and you’re enjoying the summer. Things are manic round here with all the building work. There will be an announcement on the Refurb Campaign shortly but just to re-assure everyone… it is actually happening so well done to all who campaigned with us!

Finally - the contact is: btaylor.su@ucreative.ac.uk
