Calling all Freshers’ - In case you haven’t heard - It is your ball tonight!

The Entertainments team have put on 4 live acts for you spanning the genres of time and taste for the climax of your freshers’ welcome month 2010 at UCA SU.

Obviously this is for everyone so come down if you’re a third year as this is (hopefully) your last one… and second years, well, you might have too much work to come along next year. Postgrad should also join the fun and keep me company during the DnB.

Hello everyone,

Students are arriving daily now so I wanted to briefly touch base with you guys as far as essential info for freshers’ 2010. If you haven’t already - have a look at the freshers 2010 timetable. There are pre-freshers events this week with the big launch happening on Monday 13th. The venue refurb is still taking place with additional stuff on the way but hopefully all will be signed off in about a week.

A freshers guide will be available on Monday - I will be handing these out in the quad along with wristbands for all freshers…

Now that you are the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, as well as being our MP I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to invite you to our University to meet our students and staff. Being a specialist creative arts institution, we are a unique group within the community, be it sometimes a little removed, however we add great value to Farnham and I am wanting to promote this further to the community and to yourself.

As a Union, we are politically engaged and as I mentioned, with your involvement in media and culture…

We are looking for UCA student artwork to cover the bar shutters when closed during the day - mainly to show off student work in the venue and also to avoid the bar looking like a deserted cage/prison when shut.

The design will be digitally printed on canvas drapes and will be a key design feature of the venue during the day. We are also looking for another design for the back wall.

The brief for both, other than size requirements is pretty much up to you - could be a graphic design, photo, painting, illustration etc.

Amongst all the rebranding, refurbing and recruiting, I’m now able to break the silence, update you all and confirm/squash the rumours regarding all things Farnham Freshers 2010. Bear with me, there’s a lot to discuss…

I can confirm that we are in the process of recruiting a new entertainments and venue manager and full-time bar supervisor in time for September… in the meantime, ents has fallen to me… don’t panic though – I’m good at delegation and will be handing the power straight to those who run the SU – you lot! Last night we celebrated the Farnham Clubs & Societies with the 2010 Awards dinner. I am pleased to announce the winners of the following awards:

Club of the Year - Salsa
This year the Salsa club have made good progress and gone to great lengths to promote their club and help it grow. Salsa has been consistently well-organised throughout the year and are to be specially commended for their involvement in Freshers’ Fayre. The club has maintained good attendance throughout the year.

Since the formation of the Farnham Students Ents Committee, we have already seen the positive impact of your involvement and input as we finish off this term and the planning for the summer term gets going. The aim of the committee is to ensure your opinions are heard and responded to and to encourage greater involvement from you in putting on and promoting the events.

We are proud to say that our Farnham Netball team finished the season as league champions and will now be promoted to the next league for next year. Sadly this was captain Emma Wood’s last game for the team but she finished in style, inspiring her team to a 27 – 13 victory against St George’s Medical School. Well done girls.

The Farnham Christian Union are giving away free doughnuts all this week in return for your questions about God and faith. Simply text your question to 07815836548 and say where you are and they will deliver your doughnut and hopefully answer your question. The top 3 questions will be answered at a dinner on Thursday 25 March at Lucy’s Lunchbox.

For those of you in Farnham who enjoy yoga or are interested in taking it up, we have negotiated you a great new deal for the summer term.

There is now a facebook group open to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students. On the page there are links to the NUS National Student Pride taking place in Brighton on Saturday the 6th March and other future LGBT events at UCASU. To join the group search UCA LGBT on facebook. Alternatively, a confidential email address is now up and running for anyone with questions or problems regarding their sexuality or gender. Email: lgbt@ucreative.ac.uk

I went along to the student forum last week - basically an open discussion organised by the University giving course reps the opportunity to raise any concerns be it academic or non academic issues, with most of the departments in the Uni being represented on the forum to answer these queries. With all of this packed into one hour there is rarely the opportunity for in-depth discussions and often students leave having only scratched the surface of one of the various concerns brought forward as a student rep.

Right some good news to report - we have managed to get the pool table fixed and ready for use during the daytime and evenings after negotiations with catering for space and placement. I know from our survey comments off the back of the social and learning space campaign, this was something many of you specifically mentioned so hopefully this will please quite a few of you. It’s also our first show of action as a result of the campaign, be it small but hopefully the start of bigger things to come over the next few months.
